Massage for Scar Tissue
Body Exhale Mobile Massage Therapy specializes in scar tissue recovery.
After surgery, the human body starts healing the surgical incision immediately after the incision is closed. As the incision heals, scar tissue may develop, restricting the range of motion at and around the incision location.
Scar tissue massage can be started when the wound is fully healed and there are no surgical staples, steri-strips, or scabs, which takes four to six weeks. We would like to ask for your doctor’s approval before beginning scar treatment unless you are coming to us much later in the healing process.
Scar tissue massage is a technique that includes massaging in many motions with medium to deep pressure and is used to prevent the scar from becoming hard and raised. It improves the blood flow around the area and prevents the scar from sticking to the underlying tendons, muscles, and bones. Scar massage is also a way to desensitize the area if you notice your scar is tender or painful when touched.
While massage therapy can sometimes do nothing about the looks of an old scar it is recommended to begin scar tissue treatment as soon as possible even if some time has passed after surgery or injury. Scar therapy not only breaks down the scar tissue but also helps flatten and lighten the scar’s appearance. We can help with measuring and applying silicone sheets to the affected area if that is something you choose to do. Most of our plastic surgery clients are sent home with these sheets after surgery and are highly recommended by the plastic surgeons who refer their patients to me especially after a tummy tuck, thigh lift, breast augmentation or brachioplasty.
Our scar massage clients have experienced impressive results from the massage sessions which greatly reduced pain, minimized the scars, and lost little to no mobility around the area of their surgery or injury.
